Online schools and distance education

In Australia, some students learn outside of traditional classrooms through online schools and distance education. These schools were designed for families who live far away or cannot go to school for other reasons.

One example is the School of the Air, which is made for students who are living in the Outback. In the past, lessons were given over the radio. Today, the lessons are held via video calls or online platforms to teach.

There are also Distance Education Centres in every state. These centres help students who cannot go to school because of illness, travel, sports, or living in rural areas. Lessons are taught via online platforms, which means, when you want to travel to another country, you get online school.

Another option is blended learning, which mixes online lessons with time in a real classroom. During the COVID-19 pandemic, this type of learning became more popular, and the system continues up to today.
