At the end of Grade 12, students get a school certificate. The name of this certificate depends on the state they live in. For example, in New South Wales, it is called the HSC (Higher School Certificate), in Victoria the VCE (Victorian Certificate of Education), and in Queensland the QCE (Queensland Certificate of Education).
Together with the certificate, students may receive an ATAR score. ATAR stands for Australian Tertiary Admission Rank. It’s a number between 0 and 99.95. This score helps universities decide who gets into their courses. A higher ATAR means a better chance to get into the university course you want.
